The NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (IGC) is a globally respected qualification that empowers you with the knowledge to manage day-to-day workplace risks effectively.
At Safetify Academy, we are committed to guiding you through this certification. Here is everything you need to know about the qualification, the syllabus, and how it can transform your career.
Who is this Qualification For?
The NEBOSH IGC is designed for a wide audience. It is ideal for managers, supervisors, and workers in any type of organization. You do not need to be a full-time safety professional to benefit; it is perfect for anyone who needs a broad understanding of health and safety issues.
There are no entry requirements for this course. However, because the assessment includes report writing, a standard of English equivalent to an IELTS score of 6.0 is recommended5.
What Will You Learn?
The course is split into two main units which cover everything from legal frameworks to practical risk assessment.
Unit IG1: Management of Health and Safety
This unit focuses on the "why" and "how" of safety management. It is assessed via an Open Book Examination (OBE) which you have 4 hours to complete6.
Key topics include:
· Justifying Health and Safety: Understanding the moral, financial, and legal reasons for managing safety.
· Management Systems: Learning how policy, organizational responsibilities, and arrangements work together.
· Safety Culture: How to positively influence culture and behavior to improve performance.
· Monitoring & Auditing: Methods to check the effectiveness of safety systems, such as active monitoring and incident investigations.
Unit IG2: Risk Assessment
This is a practical unit where you apply what you have learned. It is assessed via a practical assessment (3 hours). You will be required to produce a risk assessment of a workplace that prioritizes risks and recommends controls.
Key topics include:
· Physical & Psychological Health
· Musculoskeletal Health
· Chemical & Biological Agents
· Work Equipment, Fire, and Electricity
How is it Graded?
To achieve the qualification, you must pass both Unit IG1 and Unit IG2.
· Pass Standard: You need a minimum of 45 marks to pass IG1. The pass standard for IG2 is strictly pass/fail.
· Grading: Your final grade is based entirely on your IG1 result:
o Distinction: 75+ marks
o Credit: 65–74 marks
o Pass: 45–64 marks
